WOODEN FEET & ARMS

Please appreciate that all our wooden feet are made from a high quality
natural timber. Natural timber will display small colour variations which
have to be accepted as a feature of purchasing a product of this quality.

CASTORS

We recommend that you check the condition of your castor feet on a
regular basis. This action is suggested on the basis that a damaged or faulty
castor could dirty or damage both wooden and carpeted floors.

CUSHION INTERIOR CARE

We select only the highest grades of filling materials for our cushions.
However after constant use it may be found that your cushion will show
signs of compression.

For this reason it is recommended that the cushions are “plumped” on a
regular basis in order to maintain loft and appearance. It is also
recommended that cushions are turned and alternated on a regular basis
in order to minimise wear and tear.

GUARDSMAN TREATMENT

Guardsman fabric anti-soil treatment is available on request. Please contact your Collins and Hayes Furniture supplier for further information. 
 

Regular Maintenance

Dust settles on your upholstery and can not only spoil the look and colour
of the fabric, but can also accelerate wear and tear as it contains abrasive
and gritty particles which can cut and break down fibres.

Care should be taken not to use a high pressure vacuum cleaner when
cleaning feather filled cushions. There is the possibility that feathers could
be pulled through the cover.

Particular care and consideration should be given to delicate and
specialised fabrics.

Sunlight

Do protect your upholstery from prolonged sunlight as this may cause fading and in some excessive cases may rot the fabric. On sunny days draw the curtains or pull down the blind. Avoid placing the furniture too close to a direct source of direct heat such as a fire or radiator. Velvets especially can be damaged by leaning against a radiator. 

Spot Cleaning

Accidents happen and all stains and spills should be dealt with quickly
(with the exception of mud, which should be left to dry and then lightly
brushed off).

Soak up any spills as soon as possible using a clean white cloth or white
kitchen paper.

Please check wether your fabric is washable, or requires a specialist cleaner,
before taking any further action. This can be confirmed by telephoning
your retailer who should be able to supply you with all the necessary
information and guidance. This brief telephone call may save a lot of
expense and disappointment.

Remove any solids with a spoon or a blunt knife, taking care not to spread
the stain. Carefully dab the area with cold water, taking care not to rub the fabric as
this may cause the colour to fade.

To treat oily stains, use a proprietary cleaning fluid. However we would
suggest that before using a cleaning fluid that you always read the
makers instructions and do a test on a hidden area of fabric to ensure that
it has no adverse effects, as some cleaning fluids can alter the colour or dye
in certain fabrics.

Specialist Cleaning - Fixed Cover Furniture

We would recommend that the cleaning of your Collins and Hayes
furniture is best left to a specialist cleaning company.
It is important that cleaning is done before dirt or soiling becomes too
ingrained.

We would advise that the cleaning is carried out on the piece in its
entirety, do not take cushions to be dry cleaned separately as this could
result in a mismatch of colours.

Leather is a natural product and is available in many different qualities and
finishes; each hide is unique and will have its own individual
characteristics. There will always be differences in grain, texture and
colour from one hide to the next and even within the same hide.

Natural markings such as neck and belly wrinkles, growth marks, healed
scars and insect bites are common and are proof of the natural product and
set it apart from man-made imitations; to obscure them all from view
would destroy the natural beauty and softness of the hide.

It is essential to accept that these natural characteristics will be an integral
part of the hide and therefore part of your leather furniture.

Our highly skilled craftsmen carefully tailor hides to enhance the full
beauty and character of the leather and therefore the finished upholstered
product.

Aniline leather

Aniline leather is a natural product that has a particular appearance. It has
an exceptional touch and special warmth that does not come with lower
quality pigment dyed leathers.

Aniline dye is transparent; it enhances the natural appearance and unique
features of the individual hide. Each hide absorbs the dye differently thus
allowing it to retain its distinctive character.

Only the finest hides are selected for aniline treatment; a process that
creates outstanding and beautiful results.

Semi-Aniline Leather

Semi-aniline leather is very similar to aniline leather and shares a few of
the characteristics.

Semi-aniline leathers are treated with a light coating, which contains a
small amount of pigment. This ensures a consistent colour, makes it more
resistant to scratches and also gives an element of stain resistance.

Semi-aniline leather is more durable than aniline leather whilst still
retaining a natural appearance. A distressed look will still be achieved with
this leather over time and whilst it is slightly less absorbent than aniline
leather, any spills or stains must be dealt with immediately.

Caring for leather upholstery

Our aniline leather has been treated with a light leather protector to help
give some protection against stains and scratches. This however will not
protect it from the effects of sunlight. Leaving leather furniture in sunlight
will bleach it and if left in direct sunlight or in excessive heat for
prolonged periods the natural moistures present in leather will evaporate,
the leather will fade, dry out and eventually crack.

Leather furniture does require some maintenance. It should be dusted on a
regular basis; any light scratches can be removed by rubbing carefully with
a slightly damp, soft clean cloth or chamois. To avoid discolouration it is
essential to rub very gently.

If something gets spilt it is important to act immediately. Soak up any
surplus liquid with clean white kitchen paper, then gently dab with a new
piece of kitchen paper making sure not to spread the remaining liquid.
Allow the leather to dry naturally.

Lighter shades of leather in particular will require increased maintenance
in order to prevent discolouration from constant handling, dye transfer
from clothes and atmospheric dust.

Be aware that skin and hair products may cause irreversible damage to the
leather’s surface especially in high contact areas.

Never use any cleaning solvents, oils, wax polish, saddle soap, furniture
polish or general-purpose stain removers on aniline leather.
For all types of stain it is important to wipe with the damp cloth from the
outer edge of the stain towards the centre to prevent cleaning rings.

The cleaning processes mentioned here will not affect the oil and water
repellence of the treated leather.

Long term care of aniline and semi-aniline leather is important.

Our loose cover furniture provides a perfect combination for those who
seek elegance and practicality.

Whilst the construction of our loose cover furniture is identical to our tight
cover product, the overall appearance will differ due to the removable
covers.

Removing loose covers is straightforward:

Firstly remove the cushion interiors from their cases, being careful not to
damage the zip. Remove upholstery pins if they have been used on the
underside of the arms and backs. Gently lift the fabric over one arm and
then the other; the base can then be removed.

To replace the covers follow this procedure in reverse.
When fabrics are cleaned, there may be a slight loss of colour.

We therefore advise that all items from a piece of furniture (if possible the
entire group) are cleaned at the same time so that they continue to match
each other. Cleaning items individually is of course possible but may result
in colour differing from the rest of the furniture.

It is essential that you check whether the fabric that you have selected is
washable, dry clean only or requires a specialist cleaner.
Washable fabrics will have been pre-shrunk in the finishing process but it
is still important not to exceed the recommended temperature as higher
temperatures could lead to further shrinkage.

Please wash covers separately from other articles and use mild washing
detergents, that do not contain Optical Brightening Agents. these could
dramatically alter the colour of the material and must be avoided. The
product Persil Silk and Wool is suggested as a milder agent.

We recommend that the covers are hung up and allowed to dry naturally
rather than tumble dried in order to avoid possible shrinkage. Please do not
dry in direct sunlight or close to direct sources of heat.

Do not replace loose covers if they are still wet as this could damage other
components of your furniture.

Let the covers settle on the furniture for a day or so. Ironing should not be
necessary but if it is required, iron the covers on the furniture over a damp
cloth.

Machine washable fabrics can also be dry cleaned. Please advise your dry
cleaner of the composition of the fabric.
